I love fresh flowers, there is nothing like the real thing, but I do love unusual displays. I don't have the imagination or flair to work with fresh flowers, banana leaves, twine and florists wire to create my own unique arrangement yet! But I am seriously considering taking a crash course in flower arranging or better still floral design, as I can't seem to find flowers and accessories that really appeal to me. There seems to be more choice in artificial flowers and plants, which last and are easy to keep.
How can you create your own artificial floral arrangement? Where do you start?
Primarily, look at the room you want to add an arrangement to. Are there gaps or spaces you want to fill? For example an empty fire-grate, a dining room table, something for a side table or occasional table.
Consider the color scheme of the room? What size vase or vessel do you need? Size does matter in this case! You do not want an overwhelming and ornate decoration that completely drowns your room.
Let's use the fire-grate as an example; Find something that is going to sit comfortably in the grate, this could be a basket, a tray or a large pottery or glass bowl, consider logs as a base. There are so many options that you can experiment with, depending on your taste and style. If you choose a glass base remember that it is see through, therefore line the base with something such as pebbles, shells, colored beads, or foliage. Then build from the base upwards; add a chunky candle as your focal centerpiece, scented pine cones aren't just for the festive season, they look and smell wonderful in a fireplace setting. Don't make the arrangement too high; it should not exceed 2/3rds of the space in height.
How to put an arrangement together?
Choose your vase or vessel carefully, ask yourself what are you aiming to achieve? Is it a stand-alone arrangement? Or is the arrangement sharing a space with something else? If you have candlesticks on your dining table for example, you do not want then to fill the table with an elaborate arrangement. The shape of your arrangement should follow the same lines as your dining table.
Sometimes less is more!
Consider using alternative materials in your design. One idea for your arrangement could be to line a cylinder glass vase with a piece of colored organza; black or white can be very dramatic. Make sure that the piece of material is large enough to not only line the vase but can be pulled up out of the vase over the sides, you can adjust this as you go along. Add your chosen flowers and foliage piece by piece, arrange the biggest pieces towards the back of the vase and then layer smaller pieces to the front. Add texture to your design, by adding feathers, beads, twigs (you can spray the twigs whatever color you choose), fill in the gaps around the sides of your arrangement, but do not overcrowd the vase. You may find that a piece of oasis in the bottom of your case will help stabilize the display.
Shop around for ideas for the vase, bowl or something completely different and don't forget to look in the garden centers and craft stores for ideas.
Don't be disheartened if you do not get it right first time. Remember the saying "Practice makes perfect". Look around your garden for inspiration.
