How to Measure for Curtains

Deciding on which curtains to hang on your window can be a difficult choice to make. Because there are so many options, it can be useful to nail down as many of the various aspects as possible before anything else. Would you like your curtains to dangle from a pole or be hung from a track? Which heading would you prefer to use? Are you thinking of including any sort of swags or tails, or even a valance or pelmet? Will the curtains hang straight down or be held using tiebacks? Would you prefer your curtains unlined or lined? Will you combine them with anything such a blind or sheers?

Once you've decided what style you want, you're at a good place to begin the process. The process begins with deciding where you think the curtain rod or track should go. Most curtain owners hang theirs on the wall about halfway between the top of the window frame and the ceiling itself. Some, however, may prefer the rod or track either slightly higher or lower to compensate for something else or to balance out the room. If your window frame is particularly tall and deep, you may want to create a dramatic effect by hanging the curtain rod or track inside the frame. This will give the window an embossed, sunken look.

An important addendum to hanging the rod or track is that often window frames and ceilings are not quite exactly level. If you hang the curtain rod or track using a level to get it exactly right and it still looks wrong, you may want to adjust it so that it is more or less parallel with the window frame and the ceiling. Use a tape measure to find the precise length of fabric required.

The width is also important. In order to make sure your window is completely covered, use a tape measure to measure from about two or three inches outside of the window frame on either side. Double this measurement to make sure there is plenty of fabric for some good, full curtains.

When passing these measurements to your seamstress or decorator, make sure they understand that these measurements are the length you wish your curtains to be, not the length of your window frame.

The Etagere

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, defines an etagere as "a piece of light furniture very similar to the English 'what-not', which was extensively made in France during the latter part of the 18th century. It consists of a series of stages or shelves for the reception of ornaments or other small articles. Like the what-not it was very often cornerwise in shape, and the best Louis XVI examples in exotic woods are exceedingly graceful and elegant.

In modern usage, an etagere often refers specifically to a long-legged shelf unit that fits over a bathroom toilet, also known as a space saver. Recently, I was commissioned to find an affordable etagere for a living room corner. The piece needed to be of a certain size and shape and not too fussy. The more modern etageres can be found in utilitarian versions and at very low prices in places like IKEA; but my client wasn't interested; she'd found a very expensive one in a magazine, so the quest was on.

While looking for the special etagere, I found another piece for a different client, as often is the case, but no etagere. As I searched, however, I was fascinated to see the many versions of this serviceable furniture and its many manifestations. Naturally looking for something someone has seen or imagined is a more difficult process, but as long as the client is patient, it is usually successful.

My own etagere, given to me by an elderly neighbor nearly 40 years ago, is similar to the piece pictured above. It used to hold delicate tea cups from great-grandmother; but recently, in an effort to simplify my life and household chores, such as dusting, I have filled my curly-cued etagere with simple serving pieces. The larger pieces occupy the lower, wider shelves and smaller pieces near the top. While before the piece looked quite at home with all of great grandmother's tea cups-- reminding me of a by-gone era--I am rather enjoying the simplicity of the serving pieces, and they are ever so much more handy for daily or special occasion use. The simplicity of the pieces allows for the delicate turned posts to stand out and can be admired for their craftsmanship, while the simple, but elegant serving pieces also get top billing.

There is never just one solution to a decorating problem and repurposing is the name of the game today as we all attempt to incorporate family heirlooms within our own personal aesthetic. I am always interested to see what my own family does with pieces they have inherited.

If you have a new piece and want to make it look more interesting, add moldings and new hardware; if you have an old piece and want to freshen it up, do the same, but go bold or go home! Paint is the easiest and most dramatic change you can make to an old or new piece.

Third, provide him a small feather duster, broom, a dustpan and a trash can. This will remind him that he needs to do a little tidying up following the list that you posted on his closet door. The trash can will also remind him to throw bits of paper and rubbish in the can instead of just throwing it on the floor.

If your child's bed has the traditional structure (bed frame and mattress), buy some storage boxes. These plastic storage boxes come in different designs and height. They are equipped with wheels for easy pulling. Ensure that when you buy them, you measure the space under the bed that is from the bed frame to the floor. If his bedroom still has some space, you can opt to buy him storage boxes that have built-in drawers. It can be placed in one corner. The number of drawers varies depending on what you need.
If your resources will permit, get him a bed that has fitted drawers. Most modern beds are now built with drawers underneath.
Having custom-built shelves on the walls for his books, toys, and other items is another option. Use elaborate brackets so it will be like a display area of his toys, etc.
Check on the latest closets. Most of this modern furniture has divisions so clothes, socks, underwear, hankies, belts, hats, and other accessories can be stored. Ensure that he has ample space to hang his clothes especially the school uniforms.
If he uses his room to do his homework, provide him a small table and a desk lamp. Get a table that has drawers so he can keep his school items in it. You can get him a bench with drawers instead of a chair.
Lastly, do not do the tidying alone. Set a schedule with your child to do the cleaning together. This will teach him the proper way of tidying his room and is another way of bonding together. When you are through with your cleaning, make sure that you prepare a simple snack for yourselves.

Once you get this habit into his system, you will no longer have to remind him of his task. In fact, he will learn to appreciate the goodness of having a clean bedroom.
