Decorative Room Divider Screens That Will Transform Your Room Into a Paris Cafe or Museum

When space is at a premium, a room sometimes has to do double duty. For instance, your home office might have to be housed in the family room or bedroom. If you don't want to see the office furniture after office hours -- or if you just want a little privacy -- you'll probably want to separate the two spaces by some sort of room divider. And if you're an artist at heart, there are some great decorative room divider screens that are both practical and lots of fun. Before I tell you where you can find them, let's first consider your choices.
Shy Screens or Stars?
When most people think of room divider screens, they probably think of the screens that have an Eastern flavor. These screens often have lattice-work frames that are covered with either rice paper or a very thin neutral-colored canvas. They're a great choice when you need a screen that will unobtrusively fit into any decor. But if you dare, your screen doesn't have to be shy. A colorful screen can become a focal point in your room, just like colorful drapes or a large work of art. The important thing is that your room has enough space, so that the screen doesn't overpower the room.
Wouldn't You Rather Be in Paris?
If you're using the screen to create a private space for a home office, why not choose a decorative room divider that will make you want to sit down at that computer and get to work? I personally love the screens made by Oriental Furniture. Some of them feature scenes of a Paris cafe, artwork by Impressionist painters such as Degas and Monet, and even vintage European travel posters. Wouldn't you race to the office, too, if you were greeted every morning by a scene of a Paris cafe?
Check Your Back
It's easy to find room divider screens online, but here's a tip for before you buy. Remember that the screen will be seen from both sides -- front and back. So do check that the screen has been constructed so that it looks great from both sides. The decorative screens from Oriental Furniture, for example, have a different scene painted on each side (i.e. two different scenes of a Paris eatery, or two different pictures by Degas). Even if you go for a plain screen, make sure that it is reversible.
